A Republic for Western Nova Scotia
01/06/2014 17:01Something to think about and seriously consider. It is quite apparent to anyone who is willing to see that the western boundary of Nova Scotia ends at the Digby and Bridgewater line. This of course is not a physical boundary, it is one of a financial and political boundary where the “have and the have nots” meet.
Over the past number of years we have silently set back and watched the Government take our railway, ferry boat, pulp mill in Liverpool, and even divided Shelburne County, etc which effectively eliminates us from getting anything from the ruling party, we have a split county with Conservative and New Democratic representatives. We all know that the the money goes to their own kind, where does this leave us?, out in the cold with our hats in our hands!!
Some of you will probably say; “we have a ferry boat now, things are looking up, dream again! They took a ferry boat that was meeting the needs of this area and replaced it with a “cruise liner” We do not need a ship with state rooms, casinos and all the other luxuries, plus the high cost that the average worker can't afford. The loss of this ship meant the loss of the tourist industry, the closure of many business and the loss of an untold number of jobs. There are many other things that could be included but I am sure you can think of many others.
` Consider this, as crazy as it might sound, maybe it is high time that the citizens of the western end of Nova Scotia, (Queens, Shelburne , Yarmouth and Digby counties) seriously consider forming a republic. A republic is described in the dictionary as ”a state in which the supreme power rests n the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them,”
Maybe this isn’t so crazy after all when we stop and consider that this area has the best fishing grounds in the Province, oil has been discovered in the Shelburne Basin, we have one of the worlds best ice free harbours, (though not developed,) the mildest winter weather in the Province and has been recognized as the best growing areas for grapes, etc, (even better than the Annapolis Valley.) It is also one of the best, if not the best bird watching area on the east coast. This area is steeped in history which includes the Indians, the French plus all the nationalities that have descendants from the ship wrecks off of our coasts, etc.
This end of the Province has much to offer to the tourists if the Government ever recognized the potential and the fact that this area is still part of the Province of Nova Scotia, at least for the present time! If the people of this area wake up and take action then maybe there will be sounds of concern and positive action in The Legislature for the entire Province instead of grumbling, complaining, fault finding and making plans for central and eastern Nova Scotia while forgetting that the western part of the Province still exists!
Without this type of action what hope is there for this part of the province? we have set idly by for years while the central and eastern parts of the province have prospered, Why is it that the offices of the Provincial and Federal Governments relocate in all the cities, etc but shy away from the smaller areas, possibly because the employees don’t want to settle in remote area, if that is the case then they should pack up their jobs and let others have them. It is time to stop babying these workers! We (Military, police, etc) served in a lot of places that we weren’t fussy about but we went anyway!
The US government and Millionaires have ruined the lives of countless thousands and thousands of their citizens in the past few years and our Government and Millionaires are doing the same thing to many of our citizens because their god is the almighty dollar.
What do we have to loose by trying this?, nothing, but we have everything to gan.
